What is Gout?

If you’re experiencing intense pain, inflammation, or tenderness near a joint in your foot, it is possible you have a condition called gout. Gout is a form of arthritis that leads to sudden flares of discomfort that tend to come and go suddenly (Mayo Clinic, 2021). There are various causes and risk factors, but with the help of a podiatrist, the condition can be managed.

Gout is most common in the big toe joint, though it can affect other joints as well. It is characterized by flare-ups that are sudden and can last for days or weeks at a time (CDC, 2020). Patients with gout can experience long periods of time without symptoms. Sometimes patients can go months or even years between flares. Signs include sudden pain, redness, swelling, and limited movement in the joint. Symptoms are typically more intense at the beginning of a flare and will slowly dissipate over time (Mayo Clinic, 2021).

Gout develops due to hyperuricemia which is when there is a build-up of uric acid. Uric acid is formed when purines in the body are broken down, and these purines are found both in the body naturally as well as in the foods we eat (Arthritis Foundation, 2022). Examples of high-purine foods include red meat and certain kinds of seafood. Sharp crystals form from the uric acid buildup, and those crystals can become lodged in joints leading to Gout.

Treatment for Gout is focused on managing current symptoms or preventing future flares. During an active flare-up, the primary focus is minimizing pain with anti-inflammatory medication. Making lifestyle adjustments is recommended for the prevention of Gout. Potential changes include reducing red meat or fish intake, limiting alcohol, and losing weight (CDC, 2020). In some cases, a doctor may prescribe medication to lower uric acid levels in the body.
