What are Ganglion Cysts?

Ganglion cysts are lumps that develop near tendons or joints, commonly on the ankles or feet. Though any bumps or changes like this can be concerning, ganglion cysts are noncancerous and frequently go away over time without causing any pain. However, depending on their size and location, they can occasionally cause discomfort, tenderness, or hinder joint movement (Mayo Clinic, 2020). In such cases it may be recommended to drain the cyst.

Ganglion cysts are fluid filled sacs underneath the skin. Typically they are firm, but they can also be soft. Their exact cause is unknown, though researchers theorize they may happen after injuries (Cleveland Clinic, 2020). For many, the only sign that a ganglion cyst is present is the physical lump. In other cases patients can experience discomfort in the area or a sense of tingling and numbness. It is also possible for some to have hidden ganglion cysts that can cause pain but go unseen, in which case a doctor may order an MRI to confirm its presence (Cleveland Clinic, 2020). Ganglion cysts also tend to increase in size if they are in an area where there is lots of activity.

If the cyst is causing pain, making aspects of daily life difficult, or causing insecurity due to the physical appearance, there are different treatment routes providers may take. These include immobilizing the area with a splint or brace to temporarily minimize activity, anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling, and aspirating or draining the cyst (Mayo Clinic, 2020). In cases where the condition persists, causes pain, or hinders daily activities, surgery might be recommended.
